Pawlus Roundhouse
One of the crowning jewels of the layout, this steam engine facility was built by Carter Pawlus with meticulous attention to detail. Everything that the prototype had in a similar facility is duplicated here. It took several months just to construct the first building on site. Because of its intricate detail and craftsmanship, this was one of two areas salvaged intact and is now installed in the new HO layout in the museum area of the building.
This was the first roundhouse completed. It is a South River Model Works kit with all plaster castings, including the floor and pits with Grantline windows. More than 150 lights adorn the complex. The powerhouse sits next to it. The roof is removable as shown to reveal the interior detail. |
Another view of this roundhouse from the turntable at dawn . Workmen are busy at all hours of the day. The turntable is 136ft in diameter, large enough to accommodate a Big Boy. |
Carter's brass collection, now donated to the Society, occupies many of the stalls. The facility is now nearly complete with coaling tower, wash stand, ash pit, etc. The third roundhouse is now completed with 5 more stalls for a total of 18.
A view looking out from one of the 18 stalls in this facility. Note the lights in the pit, which are also plaster castings. This is a view from the third building, recently completed. Interior details are to be added. |
