Railroad Veterans Park
The Railroad Veterans Park was located at the north end of the Proviso Yard at the foot of Chessie Hill. This was a small area that was discussed for a number of years, but because of its small size, there wasn't much that could be put there. Finally the idea of a small park was brought up with a miniature golf course, a playground for the kids, and a fully operational train ride surrounding it. This is one of two areas preserved intact when the layout was dismantled, the other being the Pawlus Roundhouse. They are both now installed in the new HO layout in the museum area of the building.
The parking lot and entrance on the east end of the park is shown here. There is ample parking for guests. Pathways wind throughout the park. |
This area was one that went undeveloped for some time because the hills behind it had to be finished first. Once that was done, the idea for a park quickly developed.
The west end of the park, complete with a playground for the kids. There is a lot a detail in this area that the camera can't capture |
Miniature golf is a favorite activity in the park |
